About the types of Highly Skilled Professionals
The Highly Skilled Professional visa has “Type 1” and “Type 2.”
Furthermore, Type 1 is further subdivided according to the content of the activities (job duties).
Highly Skilled Professional (i) (a)
“Type 1 (a)” is for those who are engaged in “research” or “educational” work. It is defined as “activities involving research, research guidance, or education based on a contract with a public or private institution in Japan,” and requires being engaged in work under an employment contract with a company or other entity in Japan.
The job duties corresponding to this status of residence are as follows:
- Professor
- Researcher
- Educator
Highly Skilled Professional (i) (b)
“Type 1 (b)” is for those who are engaged in “work that utilizes knowledge or skills.” It is defined as “activities involving work that requires knowledge or skills in the fields of natural sciences or humanities, based on a contract with a public or private institution in Japan,” and requires having an employment contract with a company or other entity in Japan.
The job duties corresponding to this status of residence are as follows:
- Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services
- Skilled Labor
- Legal/Accounting Services
- Intra-company Transferee
However, please note that those engaged in “international services such as translation and interpretation” within the “Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services” visa category are not eligible for the Highly Skilled Professional visa.
Highly Skilled Professional (i) (c)
“Type 1 (c)” is for those who are engaged in “management” or “administration.” It is defined as “activities involving business management or administration at a public or private institution in Japan,” and requires being engaged in management or administrative duties at a company registered in Japan.
The job duties corresponding to this status of residence are as follows:
- Business Manager
Highly Skilled Professional (ii)
To become a Highly Skilled Professional Type 2, it is first necessary to have engaged in activities as a Highly Skilled Professional Type 1 for at least three years. Additionally, it is required to continuously maintain a score of 70 points or more.
