“Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services” is a work-related status of residence for engaging in activities based on an employment contract with a company or public/private organization in Japan, which require:
① Specialized skills and knowledge in the “natural sciences.”
② Specialized skills and knowledge in the “humanities.”
③ “Sensibility unique to foreign nationals.”
⇒ These are fields belonging to the so-called “science and engineering” disciplines, such as physics, chemistry, engineering, medicine, and agriculture.
⇒ These are fields belonging to the so-called “liberal arts” disciplines, such as law, economics, literature, history, psychology, and business administration.
A certain level of specialized knowledge acquired by majoring in a specialized field at a university, etc., is required. Knowledge gained solely through professional experience is not sufficient. It is not permitted to engage in tasks known as “so-called simple labor” that do not require specialized knowledge while holding this status of residence.
⇒ This refers to tasks that require a way of thinking or sensitivity unique to foreign nationals that typical Japanese people do not possess.
In other words, to perform these tasks, a certain level of specialized ability is required, based on ideas and senses cultivated within the society, history, and traditions of a foreign country.
