Visa Requirements
The requirements for a “Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services visa (Status of Residence)” are as follows. You must meet criteria such as relevance, conformity to standards, and substantiality. (The following is an excerpt from the Immigration Control Act, etc.)
Relevance
Activities that involve engaging in work requiring technology or knowledge in the fields of physics, engineering, or other natural sciences, or in the fields of law, economics, sociology, or other humanities, based on a contract with a public or private organization in Japan, or engaging in work that requires a way of thinking or sensitivity based on a foreign culture.
Conformity to Standards
① Must conform to any one of the following:
- Graduated from a university after majoring in a relevant subject, or have an equivalent or higher level of education.
- Completed a specialized course at a Japanese vocational school after majoring in a relevant subject.
- Have 10 or more years of practical experience (including a period of study at a university or similar institution).
② Must conform to all of the following for international services:
- Engaging in translation, interpretation, language instruction, public relations, advertising, overseas business transactions, design related to fashion or interior decoration, product development, or other similar work.
- Have 3 or more years of practical experience in work related to the duties you will be engaged in. However, this does not apply if a university graduate is engaged in translation, interpretation, or language instruction.
③ Receiving a salary equal to or greater than the salary received by a Japanese national engaged in the same work.
It is necessary that the activities the applicant intends to engage in in Japan fall under the activities prescribed for each status of residence in the Appended Table of the Immigration Control Act (relevance), and that the applicant conforms to the standards prescribed for each status of residence in the Ministerial Ordinance on Standards (conformity to standards).
In addition, you must obtain permission by proving the “relevance” and “conformity to standards” mentioned above through submitted documents. It is also necessary that you have no special issues, such as a criminal record. Furthermore, it is a key point that the amount of work the applicant will do that falls under “Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services” is substantial (substantiality).
