Checklist (Permanent Residency)

If you are considering applying for a Permanent Resident Visa, you should first try to fill out a “checklist.” This sheet is posted on the website of the Immigration Services Agency. Using this sheet, you can easily find out whether you are likely to be able to change to a Permanent Resident Visa. Please note that there are three different types of checklists, depending on your current visa status.

(Important) Before applying, please use the following checklist (Excel) to confirm if you meet the requirements for permanent residency.

1. Those with “Spouse or Child of a Japanese National” or “Spouse or Child of a Permanent Resident” status
2. Those with “Long-Term Resident” status
3. Those with a work-related status of residence

The following checklist is for those in category 3, “Those with a work-related status of residence (people in Japan on a work visa).”

• If you answer “No” to even one question, there is a high probability that your application for permanent residency will be “denied.”
• Even if you do not have a single “No,” this does not guarantee that your application for permanent residency will be “approved.”
