What are Specified Skilled Worker (i) and (ii)?
There are two types of residence statuses under the “Specified Skilled Worker” system
“Specified Skilled Worker (i)” is a residence status (visa) for foreign nationals who engage in work that requires a considerable level of knowledge or experience in a specified industry.
On the other hand, “Specified Skilled Worker (ii)” is a residence status for foreign nationals who engage in work that requires proficient skills in a specified industry.
Key Points of Each Residence Status
A key point for foreign nationals residing under the “Specified Skilled Worker (i)” status is that they are required to receive support from the accepting organization or a registered support organization.
(As for “Specified Skilled Worker (ii),” they are not subject to this support, and the provision of support by the accepting organization or a registered support organization is not mandatory.)

Key points of the Specified Skilled Worker (i) visa
Period of Stay: Renewable for periods designated by the Minister of Justice for each individual, not exceeding one year. The total period of stay as a Specified Skilled Worker visa is a maximum of five years.
Skill Level: Confirmed by an exam, etc. (Foreign nationals who have completed Technical Intern Training (ii) are exempt from the exams.)
Accompanying Family: Generally not permitted.
Japanese Language Proficiency Level: Confirmed by an exam, etc., for the Japanese language ability required for daily life and work. (Foreign nationals who have completed Technical Intern Training (ii) are exempt from the exams.)
Subject to support from an accepting organization or a registered support organization.
Key points of the Specified Skilled Worker (ii) visa
Period of Stay: Renewable every 3 years, 1 year, or 6 months.
Skill Level: Confirmed by an exam, etc.
Japanese Language Proficiency Level: No confirmation via exam, etc., is required.
Accompanying Family: Possible if requirements are met (spouse, child).
Not subject to support from an accepting organization or a registered support organization.
